I recently embarked on a Disney Cruise, an experience that has quietly become one of the company's best offerings for adults. The Disney Destiny, a newly launched ship, promised a relaxed escape from the hectic pace of Disney's theme parks. However, what I discovered was a fascinating dichotomy: while the ship is designed with adults in mind, its most captivating features also become its most problematic. This is the tale of a mother-daughter getaway that revealed the complexities of catering to adults within a family-oriented brand.
The Disney Destiny is a floating Disney resort, with over 4,000 passengers and 1,200 staterooms. It boasts three dining rooms, a buffet, quick-service eateries, pools, Broadway-style entertainment, kids' clubs, and a plethora of family activities. The ship's overarching 'Heroes and Villains' theme is evident in its elegant cocktail lounges and restaurants, nodding to classic Disney films. But what stood out to me was the extent to which the ship had been tailored for adults.
The three-night cruise, starting at just over $1,000 per person, includes accommodation, meals, and entertainment. However, the bill rises with the length of the cruise, and the nine luxurious adult-only spaces, ranging from cocktail bars to a spa and the Quiet Cove pool, are among the ship's biggest strengths. These spaces are designed to be intimate, exclusive, and immersive, reflecting Disney's goal of creating an elevated, story-driven experience for adults.
However, the intimacy of these spaces also creates a bottleneck. The De Vil's cocktail lounge, inspired by 101 Dalmatians, is a prime example. It's an interactive musical performance that transforms the intimate lounge into one of the ship's hottest tickets. But the bar areas are too small for demand, and the Haunted Mansion Parlor, Cask and Cannon, and The Rose are similarly packed. This creates unnecessary competition for what should be a relaxing part of the cruise.
Disney's designers, Sara Pepper and Madeline Weber, emphasize that families are at the heart of their ship design. They moved kids' clubs to a more centralized location, closer to adults-only areas, to ensure everyone can enjoy their own experiences while feeling connected onboard. However, this shift has led to space restraints, particularly in the adults-only areas. The goal is to create an immersive experience that feels exclusive and story-driven, but the current model creates unnecessary competition for what should be a relaxing part of the cruise.
The irony is that Disney has already solved this problem before. The WaveBands aboard the Disney Wonder was an adults-only venue that welcomed families during the day before transforming into an 18+ entertainment space each evening. It was large enough to host karaoke, trivia, and live performances without forcing guests to queue down the corridor. Disney doesn't need fewer themed cocktail bars; it needs to stop placing its most in-demand entertainment inside venues that can't accommodate everyone who wants to experience it.
In my opinion, Disney should consider staging performances in larger venues, increasing the number of shows, or redesigning future ships with more flexible adults-only spaces. The next step is to ensure that everyone gets the chance to enjoy the adults-only spaces without needing to queue before the doors even open. This would allow adults to truly unwind and indulge in nostalgia without an overstimulated child in sight.
As a self-confessed Disney adult, I find these child-free spaces to be a huge draw. But by incorporating entertainment offerings into these intimate spaces, Disney has created a bottleneck. If Disney really does take guest feedback into consideration, then my wish upon a star is for an adults-only ship where Cruella isn't confined to a tiny bar and all who wish to attend her show can do so in peace.
